World Soil Day, observed annually on 5 December, raises
global awareness of the vital role soil plays in sustaining
life. Its purpose is to inform individuals, organizations, and
governments of the urgent need to protect and manage
soil resources for future generations, while promoting
sustainable practices and policies.
In 2025, the theme “Healthy Soils for Healthy Cities”
highlights the challenges of soil sealing—the conversion
of farmland into settlements, infrastructure, and urban
development. This process permanently diminishes soil
functions and ecosystem services, threatening biodiversity,
carbon storage, food security, nutrition, public health, and
the resilience of urban economies.
