The Land Development Department (LDD) advances its
mission under the principle “Caring for Soils: Measure,
Monitor, Manage”. Its work is anchored in three core
processes: measurement of soil properties to set land-use
standards, monitoring through GIS technology to guide
future planning, and management to restore degraded
                                 soils—whether saline, acidic, or erosion-prone—into
                                 productive use.

With 12 regional offices and a strong foundation in
nationwide soil surveys and scientific research, the LDD
                                 integrates proactive, community-based approaches. Its
Volunteer Soil Doctors network, first launched in 1985
and later expanded nationwide, has become a vital
bridge connecting farmers with practical knowledge and
soil management services. Together, these efforts ensure
that Thailand’s land resources are developed and
sustained for the benefit of future generations.
