King Bhumibol
World Soil Day Award
2566
“Soils, where food begins”
Thailand, in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United
Nations (FAO), established the King Bhumibol World Soil Day Award. This award
was created to honor the legacy of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great
and to continue his commitment to the conservation of natural resources and the
sustainable development of soil. The award is presented annually on December
5th, coinciding with World Soil Day and the birthday of King Bhumibol. The first
award was given in 2018.
The King Bhumibol World Soil Day Award is given to individuals, communities,
organizations, institutions, or countries that have made significant contributions to
promoting and raising awareness of the importance of soil resources and
sustainable soil management.
The theme for the 2023 King Bhumibol World Soil Day Award was “Soils, Where
Food Begins,” emphasizing the importance of healthy soil for food security, safety,
and environmental health, aligning with the “One Health” approach. This concept
highlights the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health,
aiming for holistic well-being. The focus is on achieving sustainable food security
through four key areas: Better Production, Better Nutrition, Better Environment,
and Better Life, along with efforts to prevent soil erosion.
The winner of the award was the Soil and Fertilizer Society of Thailand and its
network, recognized for their project “Spirit of Soil, Spirit of Partnership.”
This project showcased the power of integrated efforts with the Natural Agriculture
Foundation and the Global Soil Partnership, supported by the Ministry of Agriculture
and Cooperatives and the Land Development Department. The initiative aimed to
instill a deep appreciation for soil, emphasizing its critical role as the foundation of
food and life, and encouraging the protection and preservation of healthy, fertile
soil to ensure sustainable food production for all.
